All Things Perio & Crown Lengthening

Includes practical afternoon session where delegates get to practice the skills they learn on the day.  

Course Overview:

Morning Session - All things Perio
Aims:

1. To understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases. 
2. To understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal in general dental practice. 
3. To appreciate the range of treatment options available for periodontal disease.
To appreciate the range of periodontal treatment options available and indications for each. 
5. To understand the objectives of non-surgical therapy and how this relates to current practice.
6. To understand the indications for, and limitations of, antimicrobial therapy. 

Objectives:
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Diagnose periodontal diseases accurately and effectively. 
2. Use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool. 
3. Use periodontal probing more effectively.
4. Assess patients' level of risk for periodontitis effectively. 
5. To be able to deliver oral hygiene effectively. 

  1. Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients.
  2. Use antimicrobials in a rational and evidence-based way.

Afternoon Session - Crown Lengthening
Aim:  To appreciate the indications and contraindications for surgical crown lengthening and other pre-restorative techniques. 
Objectives: At the end of the course participants will be able to carry out simple crown lengthening procedures. 
In the afternoon we will look at the theory behind crown lengthening and explore the types of cases that would benefit from crown lengthening. We will then have a demonstration of crown lengthening on pigs heads and delegates will then get the chance to practice techniques on their own pigs jaws.

  • Ian is a Specialist Periodontist and Senior Clinical Teacher at Liverpool University. He was Undergraduate Teaching lead at Liverpool from 2010 to 2015 and was responsible for developing the undergraduate course as it stands today.  Ian is also heavily involved in post-graduate
    teaching both at Liverpool and nationally.
  • He provides one to one surgical training for the Restorative
    Registrars at Liverpool and
    together with his good friend Phil Ower, teaches the periodontal component of the Royal College of Surgeons Restorative Diploma.
  • Ian has lectured at most of the UK’s major dental events
    including the British Dental
    Association Conference, the
    British Society of Restorative Dentistry annual conference, the British Society of Dental Hygienist and Therapists national meeting and the British Academy of
    Cosmetic Dentistry.
  • Ian serves on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology as their Honorary Editor and Webmaster and is the British
    Society of Dental Hygienist and Therapist Honorary Vice
    President.
  • To complement his academic
    interests, Ian also has a busy Periodontal referral network and sees patients for all aspects of periodontal and peri-implant
    disease. Ian is also known for his aesthetic periodontal surgery techniques, enhancing smiles through soft tissue grafting and crown lengthening.
  • He is passionate about teaching and passing on skills and knowledge to the profession.
