The world’s first real movement record capture system for dental prosthesis design

Itaka Cyclops

ITAKA offers a technology that allows for the capture of precise and individual data on the patient and enables the creation of comfortable prosthetics for the patient, which are functional in terms of jaw movement.

Unlike what was done in the past, ITAKA can take advantage of the patient’s free movements, allowing them to maintain their dynamic balance, which has numerous advantages for both the patient and the dentist.

With the analog system, the dentist is forced to use face arch systematic and invasive techniques combined with positioning wax in an attempt to replicate the jaw movement in the articulator. With the ITAKA digital system, we replicate ALL the steps in a single, fast, functional recording. This provides useful and certain data in the event of medical legal requirements. The recording is analyzed to evaluate the patient’s health, allowing the dentist to make an accurate diagnosis and choose the most appropriate treatment plan.

We finally have a simple, quick way to allow us to provide our patients with what they really need. Until today it was the patients who had to adapt to our rehabilitation therapeutic solutions, but now we are able to manage the real functional masticatory needs in a predictable and individual way. A revolution of this kind, inevitably, will have to be pursued and implemented by stepping out of one’s comfort zone, distorting the dogmatic principles of classical gnathology which for over a hundred years have remained anchored to mechanistic or functionalistic schemes without considering the real logic of the human system in complexity of the bodily function and not just occlusal function.

CYCLOPS is Itaka's clinical data acquisition system. A high precision tool, its system of highest-tech video cameras allows scanning, recording and exportation of all the patient’s free mandibular movements as data reproducible according to analytical schemes that are measurable and comparable with ranges of normality.

All movements necessary for analysis of free mandibular movements, in fact, such as opening and closing of the mouth, front structure, gothic arch and the different mastication cycles for the various food typologies, are recorded in programmed and customizable sequences in the software.

The movements thus registered as data and graphics are then replicated digitally and interpreted through sophisticated software, used for diagnostic purposes as well as for the creation of various prosthetic or therapeutic articles. They subsequently GUIDE an ANALOGICAL DYNAMIC ARTICULATOR in their functionality, with precise reproduction of the patient’s movements as recorded by Cyclops and modified in the implementation of these same articles by the Management Software.

The Arthur Articulator

For Labs

The Arthur articulator

The Arthur articulator replicates the movements recorded analogically without use of CAD. It is used for final finishing and trial before insertion in the oral cavity.

Initially, years ago, Beppe Rampulla had a single desire and a precise goal: to replicate the real movement of the patient’s mouth, and hence their jaw, something that could not then be done in any way.

The starting point was the use of video cameras to record the patient’s mouth movements, movements that were subsequently replicated only on the dynamic articulator. This fundamental starting point enabled him – and still enables him – to use the system only analogically.

Only later, after almost three years, did CAD technologies implement the function of a virtual articulator able to move the jaw, and ITAKA was ready to record movements that could be transferred from the patient’s reading to the digital platform.

In practice, we can insert the patient’s head with all its habitual movements in the computer with the possibility to move it in any way but above all to see it from within, something that is not logically possible in reality.

Having already traced the movements with analogical exit designed for our ARTHUR robot, we only had to take those tracks and import them into CAD system. We thus became the first to use the patient’s real movements within CAD systems able to allow the use of such movements.
